A few weeks ago, Google announced it will optimize its online shopping search service for iPhones and Android. We liked this move but argued it only gets you halfway there: The feature set could really be unleashed with the capability to scan bar codes and search local inventory feeds.

Today, we were granted part of that wish. The Google mobile blog announces bar code scanning software baked right into the service. It will only be available for Android phones, because of their built-in capability to handle this (same capability that powers the popular ShopSavvy app we’ve written about).

The rest of the details for downloading and using it are on the Google Mobile Blog (too bad i don’t know anyone with an Android phone).
